A Note from the Christian Education Board......
Each year the Sunday School program picks a theme to center our efforts around. This year’s theme is Putting Faith Into Action. The children’s offering will go towards supporting this theme. Each month we will ask the children to donate different items also to support this effort. Our main focus locally this year will be restocking the Christ Lutheran Food Pantry. Our global focus will be for the Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and Global Health Ministries (GHM) efforts. Specific information on LWR and their kits can be found at www.lwr.org, for GHM, look at www.ghm.org. We will update our contributions each month on the bulletin board and in the Ambassador.

One blunt scissors
One 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
One pencil sharpener
Six new, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secure together with a rubber band
One eraser approximately 2-1/2" long
12 sheets of construction paper in assorted colors (if necessary, fold in half to fit into the school kit bag)
One box of 16 or 24 crayons
One sturdy cloth bag approximately 12" X 14" with cloth handles or drawstring closure
All items should be new and in good condition. Remove any excess packaging and pack items in the bag, fold the handles over, and secure with two large rubber bands or tie with yarn. Do not enclose the kit or any of its contents in plastic bags.

November:
Layettes for LWR– completed kits contain the following items. Complete a kit to donate, or donate specific items and CLC will fill out the kits with all the items donated.
Two shirts or Onesies® (or similar item)
Two gowns or sleepers (with or without feet)
Two receiving blankets
Four cloth diapers, flat fold preferred
One sweater or sweatshirt
Two washcloths
One bath-size bar (4-5 oz.) of gentle soap, in its original wrapping
Two diaper pins
TIPS
Sizes up to 24 months may be used. Consider varying the sizes of the clothing items so the layette will continue to be useful as the baby grows.
Sweaters may be knitted or crocheted from leftover yarn, or made from heavy double knits or fleece. Select a pattern that suits your skill level. Preferred styles have buttons or ties down the front.
A bolt of flannel can furnish a number of receiving blankets, diapers and gowns. A square cut the width of fabric (usually 36" or 45") easily makes a blanket. Diapers can be made by using a pinking shear to cut pieces 25" X 27" (note: this is a change in size from previous guidelines).
Use care when making blankets and diapers with flannel. It may be necessary to zigzag edges or sew a hem to prevent raveling.
December:
Soup & Canned Meats for Food Pantry

One metal nail file or nail clippers with file attached, remove packaging (do not substitute cardboard emery boards for the file)
Six Band-Aids® (or similar brand), preferably 1/2" to 3/4"; secure together with a rubber band
All items should be new and in good condition. Wrap smaller items in the washcloth; wrap washcloth and remaining items in the towel and tie securely with ribbons or yarn. Do not enclose the kit or any of its contents in plastic bags.

April/May:
Midwife Kits for GHM– completed kits contain the following items. Complete a kit to donate, or donate specific items and CLC will fill out the kits with all the items donated.
Please use new or clean used items in good
condition.
2 cord ties: 8" narrow lengths of selvage, 1/4" twill tape or heavy white knit/crochet cotton
1 razor blade (single-edge, safety-wrapped), may be purchased at a home improvement store
1 regular size bath towel
1 36" square muslin or sheeting
1 wash cloth (thin)
1 bath size bar Ivory soap
1 newborn stocking cap (keep hand knit ones very small)
1 small cotton-blend or flannel shirt (to waist only as the babies do not wear diapers)
1 receiving blanket
1 pair plastic or latex gloves (clean, not sterile), NO kitchen gloves
Place the cord ties and razor blade inside a small Ziploc bag. Wrap everything inside the bath towel and insert into a 2-gallon Ziploc bag. Squeeze the air out of the bag before sealing it.
Helpful Hints and Money-Saving Ideas:
Cord ties: You can cut an abundance from a skein of heavy white cotton knit/crochet yarn.
Bath towel: Also check with local hotels about towels. Maybe they have some that are not "up to standard." Or look for bargains in discount stores.
Muslin or sheeting: Used sheets in good condition can be cut to size.
Wash cloth: Some stores have bundles of 12 or 18 for around $5.
Stocking cap: Cut a strip of knit fabric lengthwise about 8" wide, fold in half, sew or serge. Cut the sewn strip into pieces about 8" long. Gather the top and fold the other end up.
Shirt: Sew from flannel. Or buy nice-looking light terry or knit sleepers at garage sales or second-hand stores. They are often in good shape since the babies grow out of them so fast, but they must be cut just above the crotch and hemmed.
Receiving blanket: The cheapest are probably the 5- or 6-pack available at some discount stores. But even better, you may find some almost new flannel sheets at a second-hand store. Cut them to size and serge or finish with a close zigzag around the edge.
